ENFERMEDADES NEURODEGENERATIVAS ASOCIADAS A INFECCIONES
Synopsis
Infections of the central and peripheral nervous systems have been closely linked to the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis. These pathologies share pathophysiological mechanisms related to chronic neuroinflammation and progressive neuronal damage, mediated by various infectious agents, especially neurotropic viruses. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between neurological infections and neurodegenerative diseases, identifying the main microorganisms involved and the molecular mechanisms involved in neuronal degeneration related to Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and lateral or multiple sclerosis. A qualitative, retrospective, and cross-sectional review of scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025 in English and Spanish was conducted. The search was carried out in databases such as Scielo, Scopus, and PubMed, selecting 10 articles of high and medium quality according to inclusion criteria and validated evidence scales. The results confirm the involvement of viral infections, particularly herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and SARS-CoV-2, in the activation of persistent inflammatory mechanisms, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and alterations in neuronal autophagy. These processes lead to chronic neuroinflammation and loss of cognitive and motor function. In addition, genetic factors, such as the APOE ε4 allele, increase susceptibility to neurodegeneration induced by infectious agents. There is a clear need for longitudinal research to investigate the causal relationship in greater depth and promote antiviral and neuroprotective therapeutic strategies to mitigate the progression of these diseases.
