Synopsis

Travel medicine treats and prevents imported diseases, as well as factors that increase the risk of infection in cases of international travel. This branch involves pre-travel evaluation, health education, vaccination and post-travel care; The factors that influence the incidence of an imported infection are migration, poor health infrastructure, unsafe water and food consumption, among others. Imported diseases are acquired in “endemic” regions and are diagnosed in the country of origin; Among the most relevant diseases due to their incidence and mortality are traveler's diarrhea, malaria, dengue, viral hepatitis, yellow fever, Chagas disease, etc. These pathologies imply a major public health problem, which is why active epidemiological surveillance, international coordination and effective and sustainable preventive strategies must be taken into account. It is also essential for health personnel to know about imported diseases for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
