Synopsis

The book Database Design: Theoretical and practical foundations offers a comprehensive introduction to database design, progressively addressing the conceptual, technical, and methodological foundations required for its proper implementation. Across five chapters, it presents the basic concepts of databases and the main data models, the relational model with its structure and constraints, and the fundamental principles of database design aimed at ensuring consistency, integrity, and efficiency in real-world environments. The database design process is also developed, including conceptual design using the Entity–Relationship model and logical design, with the transformation of conceptual schemas into relational schemas and the application of normalization as a key tool to reduce redundancy and prevent data anomalies. Each chapter includes practical exercises that reinforce the topics covered and allow theory to be applied through database design scenarios.
